Everyone loves ‘The Princess Bride’, a fairy tale adventure about a beautiful young woman and her one true love. He must find her after a long separation and save her from a life with the dreadful Prince Humperdink. Throughout the journey they must battle the evils of the mythical kingdom of Florin in order to be reunited with each other. They must survive the fire swam, which entails spitting fires, quicksand, and the famous R.O.U.S’s (Rodents of Unusual Size). Based on the novel written by William Goldman, ‘The Princess Bride’ was later turned into a feature film directed by Rob Reiner, and starred Robin Wright as Princess Buttercup, Cary Elwes as Westley (a.k.a The man in black), Mandy Patinkin as Inigo Montoya (“Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You kill my father. Prepare to die.”), Wallace Shawn as Vizzini (“Inconceivable!”), Billy Crystal as Miracle Max (“And as we all know, to blave means to bluff”), Carol Kane as Valerie, the wife of Miracle Max (“Liar!”), Christopher Guest as Count Rugen (the six fingered man), Fred Savage as The Grandson (who’s not so into the ‘kissing parts’) and Peter Falk as The Grandfather who reads the story throughout the film. This is a classic movie that I was introduced to as a kid, and remains one of my favourites today. It’s got action, adventure, romance, swordplay, a giant, and humour. It is pure genius. Not only do I watch the film every year (now with my own kids), but I also like to read the book start to finish. I’m okay if you haven’t read the book. But if you haven’t seen the movie or shown it to your kids of appropriate age, of course, I’m calling child services. Just kidding. But seriously, go watch it now.
It’s obvious I love the movie. Most people know this about me, including my husband. So when a parcel arrived from Amazon and I opened it to find that my husband had secretly ordered the book, ‘The Making of the Princess Bride’ by Cary Elwes, THIS CHANGED EVERYTHING!
